Deepak Chopra teaches meditation all over the world, from his center in Carlsbad, California to his travels to the meditation series he co-creates with Oprah Winfrey. He also promotes mediation through products, services, teachers and trainers. He believes that if we could get our young children to meditate, we could achieve world peace in one generation. That is so powerful to think about.
Despite all the benefits from meditation… physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally… many people don’t make it a part of their daily lives because of their busyness mindset. People find it difficult to make time for it, to sit still, to allow the process to unfold. It’s like any other habit. It takes commitment and devotion to make the change.
What if you DECIDED that meditating is EASY? It’s relaxing, it’s fun, it’s addictive… in a good way! If you can change your opinion and mindset about it, you can change the experience you receive from practicing it. My practice began about 5 years ago, and I rarely miss a day. If I don’t do it, I can tell. Mentally, I feel a little “off” on that day. In the beginning, it was a little challenging. But, once the commitment was there, the list of benefits kept getting longer! Here’s a list of some of them:
- clarity
- focus
- peacefulness
- calmness
- heightened awareness
- stronger intuition
- greater creativity
- better sleep
- softer responses
- healthier overall
The list goes on and on.
More and more people are focusing on the benefits of meditation. Vishen Lakhiani talks about it in great detail in his book “The Code of the Extraordinary Mind” and even talks about his meeting with Arianna Huffington and her collapse from exhaustion. She cites meditation as the first system she put in place to live a better life.
If you currently don’t meditate, here are three easy ways to get started TODAY:
Search through Resources to Find What Resonates with You
In my book, “I Have Today: Find Your Passion, Purpose & Smile…Finally!” I teach my own form of meditation called The Rainbow Breath Meditation and The Rainbow Ribbon of Healing. These are practices developed to help with overall health, happiness and wellness. These practices can be used on their own or with other forms of meditation — depending on what gives you the most benefit. Feel free to try them, or experiment with different processes until you find the ones that align with you the most. There are articles about all the different types of meditations and their background. There are free apps, as well as many options on YouTube. Explore your options until you find what works for you.
Find a Quiet Place that will Become Your “Meditation Station”
Pick a spot in your home where you feel the most at peace and relaxed (other than your bed). It doesn’t have to be a sanctuary or anything special if that’s not your style. Personally, I use the couch in my living room as my Meditation Station. It’s quiet in there, the couch is comfortable, and it is always a relaxing, rewarding experience. The key is to find that spot and be consistent with it. That helps to develop and build the habit.
Make the Commitment by Putting Your Meditation Practice on Your Calendar
Developing a new habit works best when you have regular reminders about it. In my work, I talk about calendaring and time blocking everything in your life, including your meditation practice. It was by doing this process that meditation became a part of my daily life. You must decide that you want to commit to it, and scheduling it on the calendar makes it real. I suggest doing it in the morning because it’s a great way to start your day. Some people meditate twice a day. Figure out the time of day that will be the easiest for you to commit it.
There you have it… developing a meditation practice in three easy steps. It’s hard to believe that sitting still for 15-20 minutes a day could have such a powerful impact on your life, but it can… and it will!
